Afrobeats singer Davido has explained why his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, intervened in his first recording contract.

Davido had signed with Black Diamond in 2011, but after his father listened to a snippet of his hit song “Dami Duro,” he decided to buy him out of the contract.

The singer revealed that his father wanted him to have full ownership of his music masters, which led to the buyout.

This revelation came after his former record label boss, Tosin Ashafa, shared details about giving Davido his first professional contract and how Davido’s father responded.

Ashafa joined a trend on X where users shared their “most random music facts.” In his post, he wrote, “I signed @davido to his first official contract under Black Diamond Promotions with Cecil Hammond/another silent partner, and we hired @GodwinTom to manage him. Dr. Adeleke realized David was serious about pursuing his music independently, reached out to us, and bought us out.”
